BIRD HOUSES

Once you set up your yard with food and water, the next step is to provide a place for the birds to raise their young. Bird Houses are a great way to do that! There are many birds in the Pacific Northwest that will use a birdhouse, such as Chickadees, House Wrens, and Violet Green Swallows just to name a few.

The WBU Chickadee/Wren Box

The variations of house styles are endless but to make sure the birds use the house a few criteria must be met:

  • The hole for entry must be specific for that bird size. Too large a hole and they won't feel safe using it.
  • Make sure it is placed in a safe place away from winds, and at least 20 feet from feeders.
  • Do not place too high off the ground, 10-20 feet is usually sufficient.
  • Make sure the inside of the house is not painted.

Nesting Material

It's not difficult to attract birds to nest in your yard. Planting bushes, trees and other shrubs helps the birds that don't nest inside a birdhouse - such as Robins, Juncos, and Towhees.

It's always fun to provide nesting material for the birds in spring. We have some pre-packaged in the store or you can gather your own.

Find dog or cat hair, lint from the drier (as long as you don't use a drier sheet), small pieces of yarn, or cotton balls, and simply set them out in a mesh bag.

You can use a suet cage to house the nesting material.

Hang it where you can watch the birds come and go for hours of fun!

BAT HOUSES

Bats need a place to live too, and at Wild Birds Unlimited we know what they need! Invite Bats into your yard with the WBU Bat House. Our Bat House is designed to The Organization for Bat Conservation specs.
